Our Story

Pamela Storey has been servicing Title I students since 1997. From the beginning of her career, she has recognized the overwhelming amount of students needing speech therapy services. Her philosophy has been helping “one child at a time,” while recognizing that many more children needed help. She has served diverse student populations in urban and rural Title 1 schools. As her career progressed, she pursued the clinical doctoral degree in speech-language pathology. Pamela saw the potential to reach thousands of underserved students in urban and rural areas by providing speech language therapy via telepractice. Her research focused on the two areas near and dear to her heart: underserved students and the high percentage of Title I students with reading difficulties. She investigated the efficacy of providing a phonological awareness intervention via telepractice as compared to in-person phonological intervention to 4-year old Head Start preschoolers in rural South Carolina. Pamela saw the potential to reach thousands of underserved students in urban and rural areas by providing speech language therapy via telepractice.

Telepractice works for children in urban and rural areas

Telepractice has been an American Speech Hearing Association-approved service delivery model since 1991 (ASHA, 2013*check this citation). It is also referred to as telehealth or telemedicine. With the decrease in the cost of technology and the increased availability of technology in schools, telepractice has been recognized as a viable solution to address the nationwide SLP shortage, particularly for the underserved populations of urban and rural students. Pamela’s research indicates that telepractice and in-person speech-language therapy can be equally effective in providing phonemic awareness interventions.
